21 September Club Cool Memoirs - Chapter 1. SeoulWith temperatures dropping below 15 degrees farenenheit, we wander through a maze of streets, looking for a place to de-ice, ensuring safe passage for a new case of beer....
Upon arrival in Seoul, Korea our Canadian team receives notification that all architects will be housed in an infamous hot-spot: Shillum Dong District. Living in separate apartments within the same condo complex, we are stunned at our fortunate "club med like" accommodations. Each of our suites are furnished with a color television, a bed and a table.
During our first few days in Shillum we observe coils of multi-colored sausage, eat delicious food containing sausage, and enjoy the daily fragrances of fresh sausage cooking.
We Learn that our "Lil' Shilla Villa" is famous in Seoul and has a nickname:
Nicknames For Shillum Dong
One evening while shopping for beverages, a sudden storm sweeps through the area. With temperatures below freezing, pelting ice-rain turning our skin numb-blue, we struggle to maintain a grip on a recently acquired case of Cass beer. Seeing a neon flashing light in the distance, we decide to pit-stop at a club for a quick vodka de-icing.
Entering Club Cool we are surprised to see Los Angeles Dodger's pitcher Chan-Ho Park mixing drinks behind the bar. As frozen eyes thaw, vision clears, we realize that it's not Chan Ho but quite possibly his twin brother.
While Kyung-Ha shares an uncanny resemblance to Chan-Ho, he is also a softball pitcher for the Shillum Sluggers. We listen in amazement as Kyung-Ha explains slowly that he is the owner of the club and is trying to learn English.
Upgrading our order to a bottle of Jack Daniels, we begin the defrosting process and listen to a classical favorite: Guns'N Roses, Sweet Child of Mine.
Promptly at 1:00am, Kyung-Ha states "Last Call" (or the equivalent in Korean) and begins to close the club, encouraging patrons to order their last beverage. Multitasking on his cell phone, he makes several calls and mentions the phrase "Canada" repeatedly.
As we prepare to leave, Kyung-Ha motions for us to remain at the bar. With the club empty, he explains that he's invited some friends and the after-hour party is about to begin...!
As friends appear at the club, interior lights darken, tables are re-arranged and the "Canadians Welcome To Korea Initiation" party begins...!
During the drinking festival we learn a secret regarding our new home in Shillum-Dong. Kyung-Ha and his friends inquire as to "why" we are stationed in this district. We state that the location is within walking distance to our client's site.
Our new friends mention that while the district has affordable housing, it's primarily due to the fact the area is currently used to accommodate criminals and convicts as they await court sentencing...!
Wow...
Being provided with sparse furniture and cheap housing, we are living in one of the most dangerous areas in Seoul, and expected to re-engineer one of the most complicated telecommunication systems in Korea, possibly the world...
"Bartender, bring us a bottle of your best Canadian Club whiskey, please!"
Filing the receipts, we plan to submit a lengthy expense statement for corporate reimbursement at the end of the month.... !!
