Fitness Korea

After spending several evenings and weekends at outdoor drinking establishments with friends, I decide to find a fitness club in Seoul, Korea to stay fit.  (...and hide from Korean soju...(spirits !)

 Coffee Anyone?

Research has confirmed that drinking coffee at work can have a positive impact on employees.  Reducing their fatigue, boosting overall performance and increasing productivity!

Apparently, a productive worker in North America is someone that has at least one cup of java a day.

Facts To Back-Up My Statement

 Evening Spirits?

While the rest of the world goes to sleep at 10:00pm, vendors work quickly to setup outdoor drinking establishments by 10:30pm in Seoul, Korea.

Sometimes referred to as the Irish of Asia, Koreans love to meet, eat and drink into the early hours of the morning.

After three months of attending these productive evening sessions and stretching my vocal chords in new directions (Karaoke), my daily intake of the "crude-in-a-cup" hits a record four cups!!

Obviously, an awake Canadian in Seoul is someone that requires a minimum four cups of java a day...

 Fitness Rescue

One evening during the stagger-step-stagger shuffle home, I notice a fitness club.  I decide to get a monthly membership to excuse myself from these Canada vs Korea drinking competitions.

During a tour of the center I casually notice a few minor cultural differences:

Clothing

Koreans  :  White shirts, White loafers, White shorts
Canadian:  Black Guns'N Roses Shirt, Grey shorts, ball cap

Entertainment

Koreans :  Watching TV drama, minimal excercise, fit / healthy
Canadian: Max excercise, looking for a vending machine

Private Trainer Assistance

For Koreans :  Excercise tips, help during lifting and advice
For Canadian: Smiles, nods and a "thumbs-up" sign

Indoor Golf

Koreans :  Practicing their golf swings
Canadian: Practicing his hockey slap-shot swing

Great Idea...?

Hiding out in the fitness club was great... while it lasted.   After a few weeks of working out in the center, my friends learn of my schedule and hatch a plan...

I'll never forget getting home early at 1:00am, and the wonderful 2:00am awakening to the charming sound of a doorbell and an intercomm blast:

"Hey, wake-up!  It's still early, we're all downstairs waiting... let's go for Korean soju!"

 Share In The Fun!

To hear the 'clink of shot glasses being cheered, Korean soju being poured and the laughter/ chatter of friends and family having fun, be sure to visit your local Korean restaurant.
